What Star Stable Online is

Star Stable Online is an online horse-riding adventure game developed and published by Star Stable Entertainment AB. You create a character, look after and ride horses, and work through a story set on the fictional island of Jorvik. It runs on Windows and macOS, and there are companion apps for iOS and Android.

It is not a competitive or combat game. The core loop is exploring the map, completing quests, caring for horses, and customising your character and stable. New story chapters and seasonal events are added by the studio over time. Whether that appeals is a matter of taste, and this page is an advertisement rather than an independent review — for unpaid opinions, look at store reviews and independent games press.

What it costs

This is the part most worth reading carefully. Star Stable Online is often described as free to play, and creating an account and playing the opening portion of the game does not cost anything. It is not free beyond that point.

  • Free: registering an account, downloading the client, and playing the early part of the game up to a low level cap.
  • Star Rider membership: a paid subscription required to continue past that cap and to reach most of the content. Star Stable sells it as a monthly plan, a three-month plan, and a one-off lifetime plan.
  • Star Coins: a separate in-game currency bought with real money and used for horses, clothing, pets and stable items. Membership includes a periodic allowance of Star Coins, but many items cost more than the allowance provides.

Prices, plan names and what each plan includes are set by Star Stable Entertainment AB and change from time to time and by country. We do not list figures here because any number we published would go stale. Check the current price on the official Star Stable shop page before you buy, and check it in your own currency.

What the game includes

The features below are the ones the studio describes on its own site and store listings. They are descriptions of the product, not performance claims.

  • An open map with a story: Jorvik is explored on horseback, with quests that unlock as you progress.
  • Horse care and riding: feeding, grooming and training are part of the routine, alongside riding and racing.
  • Character and horse customisation: appearance, tack and clothing options, many of which are bought with Star Coins.
  • A shared world: other players are visible in the world, with chat features that Star Stable moderates and restricts.
  • Ongoing updates: the studio publishes new story content and seasonal events on a rolling basis.
  • Multiple devices: a desktop client for Windows and macOS, plus mobile apps.

Notes for parents

Star Stable Online carries young store age ratings — 4+ on the Apple App Store and USK 6+ in Germany — and a large share of its players are children. If you are setting this up for a child rather than yourself, three things are worth doing before you hand over the account.

  • Understand the spending. The game is built around a subscription plus an optional currency. Decide up front what is allowed, and use platform-level purchase controls on mobile.
  • Read Star Stable's own privacy notice and parental controls. The studio publishes account, chat and consent settings for younger players. Those settings are theirs, not ours.
  • Check the chat settings. This is an online game with other players in it. Review what communication is enabled on the account.

This page is not directed at children. Accounts should be created by a parent or guardian where the player is under the age of digital consent in your country.

Things to weigh up first

We are paid if you sign up, so treat the following as the counterweight to that. Star Stable Online is a subscription game with an in-game currency on top, and the free portion is short enough that most people will hit the paywall quickly. It is a slow, social, care-and-explore game with no combat, which is the point for some players and the dealbreaker for others. Content arrives on the studio's schedule, not on demand. And because the population skews young, the tone of the shared world reflects that.

The sensible approach is the free portion first. Create an account, play up to the cap, and only then decide whether a subscription is worth it to you. Nothing on this page needs to be bought today.

How to get started

Getting started

  1. 1

    Create a free account

Register on the official Star Stable website with an email address and password. If the player is a child, the account should be set up by a parent or guardian.

  2. 2

    Download the game

Get the client from the official Star Stable website, or the mobile app from the App Store or Google Play. Do not download the game from third-party sites.

  3. 3

    Play the free portion

Work through the opening of the game before spending anything. This is enough to tell whether the pace and style suit you.

  4. 4

    Decide about membership

If you want to continue past the free cap, compare the current Star Rider plans and prices on the official shop page, and check the cancellation and refund terms before subscribing.

The button above is a tracked affiliate link. It opens a redirect operated by our affiliate network, which then sends you to Star Stable Online. Pricing, terms, refunds, account support and the game itself are the responsibility of Star Stable Entertainment AB, not of novusworks.online.
